Walking in Mourning

Today I walk with a heavy heart because of the news of the tragic and horrific shootings in an Orlando, FL night club that catered to the GLBT community.  I am part of the GLBT community, and it gives me pause to think and remember that there are people out there who hate me because of who I am, and would kill me if they were given the opportunity.  The hate has to stop.  Until it does, those who are innocent must do what they can to protect themselves.  I will not stop walking, but my awareness that there are enemies of people like me has been heightened, and I am aware that something like this could happen, even in my relatively "safe" community of San Diego.

People in the news are calling for "prayer," in response to this act of terror.  As much as I believe in prayer, action is needed, not just prayer.  The ideology of radical Islam needs to be addressed by Muslim leaders to disarm their thinking, which leads to armed violence.  In the meantime, innocent potential victims need to be allowed to defend themselves with their own weapons.  We are not sheep to be slaughtered.

I will still walk today, but with a heavy heart and a wary eye.  Yes, I made my weight goal, but it seems so unimportant now.  I'm not giving up.  But, today I am less concerned about my little issues.

Today, we walked 5.73 miles from our house to downtown San Diego.  Along the way, on Fourth St. in the Banker's Hill area, we saw something a little unusual, a cage with a pet rabbit in it.

We continued walking down 4th Street, then after crossing the overpass over the 5 freeway, we turned right and walked down the hill to Little Italy.

We had already walked about 4 miles, so we were looking for a place to have a break.  We happened upon the restaurant, Ironside, at 1654 India St.  At first, we just wanted to have a drink at the bar.  But, we had a look at the menu, and thought...hmmm...

I decided to just have the strawberry shortcake and a diet coke.  But, my spouse saw the oysters and how fresh they looked, and she couldn't resist.  So, she ordered 6 different oysters.

Rachel, the bartender,  found out that it was our first time at the Ironside, so she said that some of the smaller oysters were not always available, and she spoke to Ranada, the young oyster chef shown above, who brought us a plate with more small oysters to try, on the house, along with some shrimp.  The strawberry shortcake was very tasty and the oysters were too.

Rachel's bar was well stocked!

And she was nice enough to take my picture next to one of the restaurant's unique features, an octopus lamp.

We will have to come back again soon!

After our little snack, we walked into downtown and caught the 215 bus back to University Heights, having already walked 5.7 miles, we were ready for a bus ride back to close to home

So, where are we now on our "virtual" walk from San Diego to Washington D.C.?  Well, we added another 5.73 miles, but we're still just walking along Mexico's Highway 8, past farm houses and fields.  We're still a few days away from the US border.  Here's a look from Google Maps of where our hike to us today.  CLICK HERE
