I am walking about 5-6 miles every day (in my home town of San Diego) until I reach 3,073 miles, (as measured on my Fitbit) which would take me across America from San Diego to Washington D.C. I'm posting about points of interest along the way, as well as information and commentary about the laws and culture that affect transgender people in the states through which I will be traveling. The First 20 Days
Here is a record of my journey for the last 20 days. The columns are the Date, the number of days sequentially, the actual miles walked each day, the projected total mileage, the actual total mileage, and the average mileage per day. As you can see, I am currently averaging 5.6 miles per day. I have never missed a day of walking over 10,000 steps, but, like on June 2nd, if I stop right at 10,000 steps, the mileage is only about 4.51 miles. So, from now on I will be looking at my Fitbit and walking until I hit at least 5 miles. When I walk from my home, through the Hillcrest neighborhood, down 6th avenue, through Balboa Park, past the zoo, and back home again, that is like my walk on June 7th, which was 6.21 miles. That's a good, long walk for me in one trek. So, I am trying to break up my walking day into a morning walk of at least 3000-4000 steps, then a late afternoon power walk, and if necessary, a stroll after dinner to top off my mileage. If you want to join me, you could certainly use device other than a Fitbit. But, I like the Fitbit because it has community software that allows others to see your total steps and mileage. It keeps things honest and we can encourage (or compete with) one another. A good Fitbit costs about $150. I have the "Blaze," which costs about $200. I like it because of the color screen that is easy to read in daylight, and it tracks my heart rate, steps, and mileage. It can also track specific sports, if you like. But, I suggest that you also get the leather band because the rubber band that comes standard irritated my wrist, especially if you're going to wear it at night too. The leather band is great. I hardly feel it. I am also using the Fitbit app and the online website to track my food intake. It's helpful to see a graphic that tracks the differential between how many calories you are burning and how many you have consumed. My basic plan is to burn 500 calories per day more than I consume, which should result in a 1 pound a week weight loss. I haven't weighed myself yet this week (Sunday is my weigh in day), but the last time I weighed myself I had lost a little over 3 pounds, so I am right on target.
